A Short History Of Coffee

The original history of drinking coffee is difficult to verify.

Legend has it that a sheepherder was the first to realize the effects of coffee while tending his sheep.

His sheep ate a certain type of berry from a plant and started to become very active.

The sheepherder decided to eat the berry and he experienced the same sensation.

There is a rumor that a religious monk told the sheepherder not to eat the berry as it was fruit from the devil.

There is another rumor that monks did eat the devil’s fruit to keep them awake during long prayer sessions.

Another story is that an Arabian man was given a sentence of banishment to the desert.

He tried boiling and eating an unknown plant.

He was fortunate enough to survive by eating the unknown plant.

Nearby residents of a town close to the desert felt that the mans survival was a religious message.

The plant became known as Mocha, named after the desert town.

Few people realize the coffee plant originally grew only in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian warriors used it as food while they went on raids.

Coffee migrated to Arabia, and the Arabians began to market coffee in the middle east.

The Turks then were the first to drink it.

They added spices such as clove and cinnamon to create a sweeter taste.

Via the Venetian trade merchants, coffee found its way to Europe.

Soon after, coffee houses started to pop up all over Europe as the beverage gained popularity.

Today, millions of people enjoy their coffee throughout the day.
